Sediment Yield Variability in the Upper Yangtze, China
نویسندگان
چکیده
The development and increasing availability of global environmental data sets provides an opportunity to examine systematically the relationship between sediment yields and controlling catchment variables, employing Geographical Information Systems. Few studies have attempted to harness such information to analyse variations in sediment yields within large catchments. Sediment yields from 62 long-term gauging stations within the catchment of the Upper Yangtze River,China, havebeen analysed in relation to variables describinghydrology, climate, topography andpopulationdensity. This analysis is particularly significant as the 10 km catchment area of the Upper Yangtze will shortly be impacted by the world's largest dam scheme (the Three Gorges Project). There is a high degree of scatter in sediment yields because of natural diversity in the catchment, but this scatter is reduced when the data are grouped according to tributary location, catchment size and maximum elevation. Sediment yields generally increase with precipitation, runoff and population density and decreasewith elevation, but there is evidence of scale dependency and of variation between geographic regions within the basin. The small number of variables used are capable of explaining themajority of variance in the comparatively `natural' western tributaries but are less adequate in areas affected by large-scale agricultural activity. In future, improvements in the resolution and accessibility of environmental data sets will allow more detailed analysis of regional variability in sediment yield. متن کاملSediment yield mapping in a large river basin: the Upper Yangtze, China
A number of studies have mapped sediment yield at global or regional scales using sediment load measurements from rivers. However, the suitability of the limited mapping methods has not been fully addressed, particularly for large river basins where the sediment load data were obtained from a hierarchical river network. This study examines some of the issues related to the mapping approaches us...
متن کاملInfluence of tiller heterogeneity on yield components of rice grown under different nitrogen regimes
Increase in rice yield under excessive nitrogen (N) supply is negligible, hence it is necessaryto analyze the limiting factors via yield components. The present study was carried out during2014 and 2015 growing seasons in order to quantify the yield componenents of different typesof tiller at various N levels. Tillers were divided into three different types (superior, mediumand inferior) based ...

The East China Sea (ECS) is a region with shallow continental shelves and a mixed oceanic circulation system allowing sediments to deposit on its inner shelf, particularly near the estuary of the Yangtze River. The seasonal northward-flowing Taiwan Warm Current and southward-flowing China Coastal Current trap sediments from the Yangtze River, which are accumulated over time at rates of up to a ...
متن کاملRiverbed Micromorphology of the Yangtze River Estuary, China
Dunes are present in nearly all fluvial channels and are vital in understanding sediment transport, deposition, and flow conditions during floods of rivers and estuaries. This information is pertinent for helping developing management practices to reduce risks in river transportation and engineering. Although a few recent studies have investigated the micromorphology of a portion of the Yangtze...
